‘Yemen’s Banksy’: Murad Subay creates art against war in Berlin
Yemen remains the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, say humanitarian organizations. At the Human Rights Film Festival in Berlin, street artist Murad Subay comments on the horrors of war.

Seven black-and-white portraits line up against a red background. Huge black holes replace the figures’ eyes. “Wars are one of the evil roots, turning humans into monsters, victims, and others watching and ignoring,” writes artist Murad Subay in a caption next to his mural.

Art has an extraordinary capacity to provoke, protest and enlighten.
Less than two days after I executed the mural collage of “Subjugation” in the heart of Paris, the collage was brutally ripped down.
My work, especially the political work, has suffered a lot of blurring, disfigurement across the years, but every time it happens it makes me realize that I am on the right track.

“مرحبا بكم”
أهدي جدارية “مرحبا بكم” لكل المهاجرين واللاجئين الذين غادرو بلادهم هربا من ويلات الحرب, ثم على طريق البحث عن مكان آمن يعيشو فيه لقو حتفهم, في البحار والمحيطات والصحاري وعلى الحدود.
نفذت هذا العمل بطلب من إحدى المنظمات الإيطالية التي طلبت مني تنفيذ عمل حول موضوع اللاجئين والمهاجرين, والتي كان يجب ان انفذ هذه الجدارية بالتزامن مع قمة دول العشرين في إيطاليا, ولكن مع الأسف تمت الرقابة على الجدارية ومنعت من تنفيذها في المدينة التي ستقام فيها القمة.

Domino and the date 26 March, history of the war waged by Saudi Arabia, the Emirates and their allies, war which destroyed everything in Yemen.

“19وجه حرب” في مدخل مدينة بورت دو بوك الفرنسية:
نفذت يوم السبت 16 يناير 2021جدارية بطول 40 متر وإرتفاع مترين, في مدخل مدينة “بورت دو بوك” الفرنسية.
الجدارية في الواقع, عبارة عن 19 جدارية, لتسعة عشر وجه لفرنسيات وفرنسيين شاركوا في حملة سيلفي “وجوه الحرب” التي قد كنت اطلقتها في اكتوبر 2020, كحملة إلكترونية, لإدانة الحرب في اليمن.
وهذا العمل أتى بالتعاون مع مركز “فيرناند ليجر” للفنون, الذي تديره العزيزة لورا لاماغار, وبدعم من مدينة بورت دو بوك .
شكري الخاص لفريق العمل الذين لولاهم لما تمكنت من إنجاز هذه الجدارية, وهم: الصديقة الرائعة كارولين مالاتغيه, الفنان الفرنسي باتريك مالاتغية و شادي أبو زيد.
“19 Faces of War” à l’entrée de la ville de Port-de-Bouc en France:
Samedi 16 janvier 2021, un collage mural de 40 mètres de long et deux mètres de haut a été réalisé à l’entrée de Port-de-Bouc.
La fresque se compose de 19 affiches, dix-neuf visages de français qui ont participé à la campagne de selfies «Faces of War» que j’ai lancée en octobre 2020, sous forme de campagne virtuelle pour condamner la guerre au Yémen.
Ce travail a été réalisé en collaboration avec le Centre d’Art Fernand Léger, dirigé par la brillante Laure Lamarre et avec le soutien de la ville de Port-de-Bouc.
Mes remerciements particuliers à l’équipe sans laquelle je n’aurais pas pu réaliser cette fresque : ma merveilleuse amie Caroline Malatrait, l’artiste français Patrick Malatrait et Shady Abu Zeid.

“19 Faces of War” at the entrance to the city of Port-de-Bouc in France:
On Saturday January 16, 2021, a wall mural 40 meters long and two meters high which I worked on at the entrance to Port-de-Bouc.
The mural consists of 19 posters, nineteen faces of French people who participated in the “Faces of War” selfie campaign that I launched in October 2020, in the form of a virtual campaign to condemn the war in Yemen.
This work was carried out in collaboration with the Center d’Art Fernand Léger, run by the brilliant Laure Lamarre and with the support of the city of Port-de-Bouc.
My special thanks to the team without which I could not have work on this wall: my wonderful friend Caroline Malatrait, the French artist Patrick Malatrait and my friend Shady Abu Zeid
لإسبوعين على التوالي، عكفت على الإشتغال على سلسلة من الجداريات ضمن مشروع أطلقته في مدينة “مارتيج” جنوب فرنسا، والذي أسميته “حديقة حرب”. وهي عبارة عن سلسلة متنوعة من الجداريات، والأعمال التي تعبر عن زمن الحرب، والثورة.
إليكم الجدارية الرابعة بعنوان “جفاف” والتي تعبر عن الحرب من جانب آخر وهو شحة وإنعدام الماء في اليمن، والذي ينتج عنه موت الألاف من الأبرياء سنويا في اليمن. وتتفاوت التقارير التي تتحدث عن ان الصراع على المياه ينتج عنه مايقارب ٤٠٠٠ ضحية سنويا.
اليمن في مهب الريح، وهذا ما يجب ان ندركه جميعا.

For two weeks, I worked on a series of murals as part of a project I launched in the southern French city of “Martigues”, in title “War Garden”. It is a diverse series of murals and works of wartime and revolution.
Here is the fourth mural entitled “Drought,” which shows war from a different perspective, which is the scarcity and lack of water in Yemen, which results in the death of thousands of innocent people annually in Yemen. Reports vary according to which the conflict over water results in 4000 victims annually.
Yemen is in the midst of a wind, and this is what we must all realize.
Many thanks to the wonderful “Marie-Claude et Alain Paoli” who hosted me for painting in their garden.

Pendant deux semaines j’ai travaillé sur une série de peintures murales dans le cadre d’un projet que j’ai lancé dans la ville de Martigues, dans le sud de la France, intitulé “Jardin de guerre”. Il s’agit d’une série diversifiée de peintures murales et d’œuvres sur la guerre et la révolution.
Voici la quatrième fresque intitulée “Sécheresse”, qui montre la guerre sous un autre angle, celui de la pénurie et du manque d’eau au Yémen, qui entraîne la mort de milliers d’innocents chaque année dans ce pays. Les rapports s’accordent à dire que la problématique de l’eau fait 4000 victimes par an.
Un grand merci aux merveilleux “Marie-Claude et Alain Paoli” qui m’ont accueilli pour peindre dans leur jardin.

“حرب الإبتزاز”
مع إستمرار الحرب في اليمن، قلت مصادر الدخل لليمنيين وإنعدمت الوظائف والأجور شحت أيضا.. مما دفع عشرات الألاف من اليمنيين للتجنيد في معسكرات الأطراف المتحاربة، فقط ليستطيعوا إطعام أسرهم، في عملية إبتزاز جماعية تقوم بها أطراف الحرب على الإنسان اليمني.
جداريتي “حرب الإبتزاز”، وهي جزء من مشروع أعكف عليه في مدينة “مارتيج” جنوب فرنسا، نوفمبر ٢٠٢٠.

للحرب قدرتها على التعرية, ليس فيزيائيا فقط, بل ومعنويا.
هي تعبير عن زمن تسقط فيه كل المبادىء والأخلاق، هي زمن التوحش الخالص.

War has the ability to strip, not only physically, but morally too.
It is an expression of a time when all principles and ethics fall, it is a time of pure savagery.
